What is hypertension and how does it cause hypertensive heart disease? Hypertension, also referred to as high blood pressure occurs when the force of the blood against the walls of the arteries are too high. Hypertension is considered severe wen it reaches up to 180/120. Typically, hypertension does not have any obvious symptoms but if it is not attended to or treated, it can cause heart diseases particularly, hypertensive heart disease. Tomorrow is World Hypertension Day, a day recognized to bring awareness regarding this condition.

Dr. Santosh Kumar Dora, a Senior Cardiologist at the Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai says, "Our heart is a very complicated organ because of which we are alive, literally. It is tirelessly working to pump blood to each vessel, artery and cell. But, our heart's health is threatened by multiple factors, one of which is hypertensive heart disease, also cause due to hypertension. What is hypertensive heart disease? Hypertensive heart disease is a condition that develops over time when high blood pressure remains unmanaged, subjecting your heart to constant strain and increasing the risk of various health problems. Often referred to as the 'silent killer,' this condition can progress silently, without any noticeable symptoms."

Cardiologist Explains How Hypertensive Heart Disease Can Also Cause Other Cardiovascular Problems

When this elevated pressure persists, and the heart has to work harder to pump blood, leading to hypertensive heart disease. Over time, the excess strain on the heart can cause it to weaken, leading to an array of cardiovascular complications. Dr. Santosh Kumar Dora explains that:

  • Hypertensive Heart Disease Can Cause Heart Failure: One of the primary concerns associated with hypertensive heart disease is heart failure. The constant overload on the heart can gradually impair its ability to effectively pump blood, resulting in a weakened heart muscle. As a result, fluid may accumulate in the lungs and other body tissues, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the ankles and legs.
  • Hypertensive Heart Disease Can Cause Coronary Artery Disease: This is another significant risk associated with hypertensive heart disease. High blood pressure can damage the inner lining of the arteries, promoting the formation of plaques. These plaques can restrict blood flow to the heart muscle, leading to chest pain (angina), heart attacks, and even life-threatening arrhythmias.

Note that both these cardiovascular complications cause due to hypertensive heart disease can become fatal if left untreated. This is why it is important to treat high blood pressure problems sooner rather than later.
