High Cholesterol is said to be a silent killer as it does not make itself in your system till it starts making inroads on your circulatory system. When the bad cholesterol (LDL) collects in the arteries, specifically those of the legs, it can either slow down or block the circulation of blood. Such ineffective circulation can lead to several non-immediately apparent symptoms. The seven mentioned are the common signs of cholesterol in the legs. These should be taken seriously by you.

1. Pain or cramps in the legs

It might be a cholesterol accumulation because when you walk or climb stairs or do something light, it pains the legs or makes them sore. This is termed as intermittent claudication. This is because there is not enough supply of blood and oxygen in your muscles. As long as one rests, the pain normally subsides, but on one resuming walking, the pain can still come up.

2. Numbness or Tingling in Feet and Legs

The pins and needles feeling or a tingling in your legs might not always be an indicator of an issue in your nerves; there is a possibility that it is just a symptom of poor blood circulation due to high levels of cholesterol. This causes you to start feeling numb or burning in your legs or feet, especially in the lower section of the body, as blood vessels prevent blood from circulating to your nerves, which blocks the supply of oxygen to your neurons.

3. Cold or Pale Feet

Do you consider your feet to be colder than normal during hot seasons? Feet may grow cold because of a lack of blood, caused by cholesterol accumulation. And you will also get to know that your skin turns phan or bluish in colour, i.e. the legs are not getting enough blood that contains oxygen.

4. Slow-Healing Cuts or Wounds

You discover that when there is slackness in blood flow, the body is not healed. Small scrapes, scratches or bruises on your legs/feet could take some time to heal. This could be a symptom of the peripheral artery disease (PAD) - the disease that is directly linked with high cholesterol.

5. Shiny Skin or Hair Loss on Legs

Look, talk, look down your legs. The skin being shiny or tight, or having lower hair growth, which you have seen, may be an indication that the blood flow is less. It is the only way that you can experience such visible changes, as your skin and hair follicles will deteriorate in the long run unless you replenish your body with the necessary oxygen and nutrients.

6. Weak Pulse in Legs or Feet

A doctor normally checks the pulse in the ankles or feet just to demonstrate that there is blood flowing. Having too much cholesterol in your blood may be the cause of your pulse being low and irregular. This is counted among the most evident signs of problems in circulation, which cannot be neglected.

7. Swelling or Heaviness in Legs

High cholesterol, at times, can result in swollen, tight, and heavy legs. This happens where the blood circulation is not good, and as such, it may fail to distribute the fluids in the right way, which causes accumulation of the fluids in the lower part of the body. Just in case the swelling is not being alleviated by rest and elevation, see a doctor.

Why You Should Act Early

Heart attacks, strokes, or blockages of the arteries can be among the most serious complications that may take place with all of these signs; this is why they should not be neglected. The positive aspect of the high cholesterol level is that it is easy to control, though with the assistance of various lifestyle changes.

  • Consume fruits, vegetables and whole grains in greater proportions.
  • Do not eat fries and processed snacks.
  • Exercise, at least 30 minutes of walking.
  • Stop drinking and alcohol cessation.
  • Undergo regular cholesterol screening.

A lot can be drawn out of you based on your legs. But it is possible to think that pain, numbness, or a slow recovery period after a wound is not that important; however, that can be one of the first signs of high cholesterol. These symptoms can help prevent heart defects in the future; thus, it is required to be attentive to them and make clear lifestyle choices.
