It happens to almost all of us during periods, an itch that just won't go away. Vaginal itchiness is especially bad during menstruation. So, why do you itch like crazy when you are on your period? Let us find the answer from gynaecologist Dr Arundhati Dhar.

Lingering old blood: One thing that causes you to itch is the lingering older blood leading up to the irritation. So if you are at the end of your cycle you are likely to itch more. Here are 5 common causes of an itchy vagina.

High levels of inflammation: Another, reason why it itches like crazy is because of all the inflammation. You tend to get higher levels of inflammation in your entire body when you are on your periods so you tend to itch more.

Yeast infection: It is also possible that you developed a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis which is an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria. If you feel that your itchiness is due to a bacterial infection check with your doctor. Your doctor can take cultures even when you are on your period. If the result is positive, the doctor can prescribe you some medication to get rid of the problem. If the result is negative, you can look for some over the counter cream to get some relief from itching.

Allergic reaction to the pad: Remember all areas of your vagina are prone to itchiness when you are on your period. If you notice that your vulva feels irritated, you might just be having an allergic reaction to the pad. And if you think, that your pad is causing some allergic reaction, it is best that you use unscented pads to minimize the risk of contact allergy.
