After a night of drinking, you not only wake up with a pounding head and a dry mouth but also with diarrhoea. Unusual pooping patterns after a night of drinking are common and Dr Ninad Kakde tells you why it happens.
Alcohol irritates the lining of your intestine
Alcohol can irritate the lining of your intestines which can not only make the muscle contractions stronger and more frequent but also make your intestines leak fluid into your gut. If the contractions are more, they might be pushing out your poop even before the intestines get a chance to absorb the extra water from the waste. So, you end up with loose, watery stool. Here are 8 reasons that will make you give up drinking alcohol right away.
Alcohol kills the good bacteria in the gut
Plus, alcohol can kill the good bacteria in your gut which could alter the balance of good bacteria and lead to a higher concentration of bad bacteria. What s more, the bad bacteria can further impair your intestine s ability to absorb water. Also, too much alcohol consumption can stimulate the production of acid in your stomach which can mix with your stool. Here's why drinking alcohol is bad for your weight loss regime.
The components in your drink irritate your gut
The components in your drink may also have a role to play in your pooping pattern. For instance, if you have gluten sensitivity, beer or other sugary cocktails may irritate your gut and make the symptoms even worse. Sometimes the artificial sweeteners added to your drink may also irritate your gut.
Protip-- If you want to prevent diarrhoea it is best that you stick to no more than two drinks while making sure that you alternate each drink with plain water. Water can help dilute the alcohol in your system. And if you feel that the high-carb drink is giving you all the stomach distress, it is best that you switch to a drink which is low in sugar like a single malt.
