Ill-fitting shoes are mainly responsible for nasty blisters that ultimately result in nails falling off. Consider this plan from Dr Ninad Kakde for your toenail if it is a lost case.

If the nail comes out in a bloody mess

You need to put some pressure on the area until the bleeding subsides. Then apply some antibiotic ointment with a band-aid. Reapply the ointment and the band-aid every day after a shower until the opening has closed. Once your band-aid is on, you can soak your feet in warm water and Epsom salt for 10 minutes to reduce the soreness.

If the nail is all the way off

If the nail falls off without any bleeding or open skin lesion underneath, leave the area alone. However, if you get a blister try sterilizing the needle with some alcohol and drain it. Here's why your toenails are black.

If the nail is halfway off

If the nail is not all the way off do not pull it as doing so can cause a lot of pain and unnecessary trauma. Instead, just trim your nail so that it does not get stuck to your sock or be painful when you are wearing your show. Do not worry, you will start to see a new nail growing in about six weeks.

However, if you notice any consistent pain and swelling in your toe or any smelly drainage, it is time that you take an appointment with your doctor to find out if there is any infection. Remember that your nail sits very close to the bones of your toes and an infection surrounding the skin can easily have an effect on the underlying bone and cause a severe infection if left untreated. Follow these tips for healthy nails.
