What used to be signs of old age or childhood are now seen more often in young adults. Brittle bones, joint pains, frequent fractures -- whether hairline or severe, have become common in young adults these days. The unhealthy and extremely stressful lifestyle may be responsible for this says Dr Rajeev K Sharma, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi.
Stress, which is often considered as a cause of chronic ailments like hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, digestive disorders, depression and other health issues has now started to affect your bone health too. It has a negative impact on your bones and you will be surprised to know that doctors come across several cases of stress-induced osteoporosis in young adults. Urban women who juggle between highly demanding professional life and the family are prone to stress induced osteoporosis, says Dr Sharma. Insufficient rest, lack of sound sleep, minimal physical activity and long hours of work raise stress levels. You can try natural remedies to prevent osteoporosis.
Stress and Osteoporosis
While some level of stress is normal, when stress becomes chronic and persistently high, it acts on the body and mind in a number of ways. Firstly, when stress is high, the body releases the hormone, cortisol, as a coping mechanism. However, if there are persistently elevated levels of cortisol in our body, it interferes with bone building. In fact, the body releases calcium from the bones to neutralise the ph balance of cortisol. Secondly, when under high stress, a person tends to forego healthy eating habits, loses sleep and gives up exercise. These factors contribute in secondary ways to cause bone loss, says Dr Sharma
How to avoid it
Dr Sharma suggests regular intake of calcium rich foods or supplements after consulting your doctor. Pay attention to the body s nutritional needs and fulfill them. Physical activity is a must. You can also practice yoga and meditation to relieve stress. After the age of 35, keep a check of your bone density so that remedial action can be taken in case of low bone density.
