  1. Growing older in India is very different now than it was for our parents. We have healthcare we know more about our bodies and we can get treatment more easily. This means that a lot of people are living longer and staying active well into their seventies and eighties. As we live longer we expect to be healthy, mobile and independent.

This is especially important when it comes to our heart health. Things that used to be a part of getting older can now be found and treated earlier. This means that older people can have a life for longer.

What is heart valve disease?

According to Dr Sudheer Koganti, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, specialist in Structural heart disease and Heart Failure, Hyderabad, "One thing that is becoming a concern is heart valve disease. One kind of this disease is called stenosis. This is when the valve that helps blood flow from the heart gets stiff and narrow. Over time this makes it harder for the heart to pump blood properly.

The problem with heart valve disease is that it can be hard to notice. You might get breathless when you climb stairs or feel tired all the time. You might feel dizzy. Not be able to do as much as you used to. A lot of people think these are normal signs of getting older.

Why many people ignore the warning signs?

A lot of people get used to feeling this way instead of talking to a doctor. Their families might think they are just getting older and can't do much. So people often don't get diagnosed until later. Doctors say it's really important to notice these symptoms. Simple tests, like an echocardiogram can help find valve problems and show how bad they are.

The way we treat heart problems is changing. It's not about living longer it's about being able to do the things you want. Doctors want to help patients stay independent and keep doing things.

Treatment goals are becoming more personal

For a lot of people being successful means being able to travel spend time with family or keep doing hobbies. These things are becoming a part of treatment planning. Now doctors don't just talk about treating the disease they talk about keeping a quality of life. Patients want to know if a treatment will work and how it will affect their life in the run.

Advances in heart valve disease treatment

The way we treat heart valve problems has changed a lot in the 20 years. Surgery is still an option for a lot of people.. Now we also have simpler procedures that can help some people. Doctors look at each patient. Think about their age, health, body and what they want. This helps them make a treatment plan thats just right for each person.

Healthy ageing starts with better heart care

Now we're focusing on helping people be well in the run. We want to help them stay mobile, confident and able to do things. As India's population gets older, taking care of our heart health will become more and more important. Regular check-ups, knowing the symptoms and getting help on time can make a big difference.

Taking care of our hearts is not about treating a problem; it's about helping people keep living the life they want. Whether that means travelling, taking care of grandkids or staying active, good heart health is essential.
