When a woman is diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), her body goes through several changes, and fertility usually takes a hit. To lead a good quality and healthy life, one can focus on their diet, physical activity, and weight management, and increase fertility levels. Dr Lavanya R, a fertility consultant at Nova IVF Fertility, Sarjapur, Bengaluru suggests doing the following things for reproductive health and to boost the likelihood of getting pregnant. Read on.

Dietary Measures To Be Taken

To improve fertility and manage PCOS symptoms, a balanced diet is essential, the doctor says.

  1. Insulin resistance is a common issue for women with PCOS, and it can result in weight gain, irregular periods, and hormone imbalances.
  2. Select foods with a low glycemic index (GI). Whole grains, legumes, veggies, and some fruits are examples of low-GI diets that assist control of insulin and blood sugar levels. To control insulin resistance and lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, this is essential.
  3. Boost fibre intake. By delaying digestion and reducing insulin spikes, high-fibre foods like oats, brown rice, quinoa, beans, and vegetables help regulate blood sugar levels and enhance hormonal balance.
  4. Incorporate healthy fats. Hormone production and general reproductive health depend on healthy fats, which may be found in foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish. In particular, omega-3 fatty acids can promote hormonal balance and assist in lowering inflammation.
  5. Reduce sugar and processed food intake. Cutting back on processed meals, sugary snacks, and refined carbs helps control insulin resistance and avoid weight gain.

The Importance Of Exercise

Maintaining a healthy weight is essential for controlling PCOS and to increase fertility. It improves insulin sensitivity and controls hormones.

  1. Engage in aerobic exercises that increase body fat and insulin sensitivity. These include cycling, walking, jogging, and swimming. Better ovulation and more regular menstrual periods can result from regular aerobic activity.
  2. Strength training increases muscle mass, speeds up metabolism, and improves insulin sensitivity. It includes weightlifting and resistance training. For PCOS management, a mix of strength and cardio training works well.
  3. Be consistent and try to get in at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-to-intense activity. Frequent exercise, even in moderate doses, can have a big influence on fertility and PCOS treatment.

Weight Management And Its Effect on Fertility

Controlling body weight is essential for increasing fertility in PCOS-affected women. Being overweight can exacerbate hormonal imbalances and insulin resistance.

  1. Set achievable goals since ovulation and menstrual regularity can significantly improve with 5 10 per cent weight loss. Realistic goal-setting may inspire people and enhance the success of conception.
  2. Maintain a balanced diet. Cutting calories helps you lose weight, but you may also want to make sure your diet is nutrient-dense to help with fertility.
  3. Seek professional support, since PCOS-related metabolic problems can make weight control difficult. Seeking advice and encouragement from fertility specialists.
