In most houses the fridge is one of the most important kitchen appliances that is used on a daily basis. Right from keeping your food fresh to storing vegetables and other perishables safe from spoilage, the fridge is often a store house of all kinds of food. But it is when the odours of these foods start to permeate the air within your fridge, does it give off a foul odour. This odour is not only offensive but it also indicates that organisms capable of causing spoilage (and therefore illness) are present in your fridge.
But instead of using various artificial and chemical-laden fridge air freshners, you can use natural ways to get rid of odours in your fridge, without the ill-effects.
Tip#1: Lemon: Lemon is a great astringent and absorbs foul odours readily. All you need to do is cut a lemon and place it with the cut side facing upwards in your fridge. Remember that bigger your fridge the more lemons you'll need. Place half a lemon on the door and the other half on the middle tray of a medium sized fridge. Leave it in for about half an hour to make sure all the foul odours vanish.
Tip#2: Orange peel: Oranges work just like lemons when it comes to getting rid of foul odours. All you need to do is take the peel of an orange, crush them up a little so that they are bruised but not mashed. Now place this on a plate lined with kitchen tissue. Keep this tray in your fridge. The orange peel will soak up all the odours and keep your fridge smelling fresh.
Tip#3: Baking soda: Baking soda has coarse crystals that are highly hygroscopic (absorb water readily) in nature. This property makes it a great remedy for a foul smelling fridge. Just put two to three teaspoonfuls of baking soda in a wide mouthed bowl and place it in your fridge. This will not only get rid of foul odours but will also prevent them from occurring again. Remember to change the bowl of baking soda once every month to make sure it works efficiently.
