Delhi-NCR is also currently witnessing an outbreak in the cases of seasonal flu as numerous hospitals are reporting an increasing number of patients who have been infected by the H3N2 influenza virus. This viral outbreak is affecting nearly 7 out of 10 households in areas like Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, raising concerns on the part of the residents and health authorities.Although the virus was not a novelty a few years ago, it has been growing, and people need to be more aware of H3N2, how it spreads, and what measures can be taken to stay safe.
H3N2 projection is a type of influenza A effective in causing seasonal outbreaks of the flu.It has been known to cause respiratory infection in human beings, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Speaking to Dr Akshay Budhraja, Senior Consultant & HOD - Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, Aakash Healthcare, he said, "H3N2 outbreak in Delhi-NCR is not just a public health issue, it's something we are seeing play out in the lives of real people every single day. Children are missing school because of persistent cough and fever, elderly patients are finding it difficult to breathe, and many working professionals are struggling to get back to their normal routine because recovery is taking longer than expected."
Similar to other types of influenza virus, H3N2 is transmitted primarily by the liquids (a droplet) produced cold the sneezes and coughs of a diseased person, as well as when coughing. It can also be transmitted through contact with contaminated surfaces and then touching the nose, eyes, or mouth.Cities such as Delhi and NCR are more realistic locations where the virus spreads due to overall poor ventilation, crowding together, and seasonal transformations.
Commonly, the symptoms of the H3N2 virus are much like those of the common flu or a cold; hence, many individuals at times mix them up. The reported effects are as follows, which are the most common:
Health officials posit that the season, the state of the air in Delhi-NCR and crowding might be driving up the H3N2 cases. Viral infections usually increase during the period between winter and monsoon. In addition, the symptoms are often compared with a common cold, and people do not seek medical help early enough, which results in complications in the susceptible groups.
Although any person can be infected with the H3N2, there are groups of individuals who have a high chance of falling seriously ill:
Early diagnosis and treatment are particularly useful to these groups.
H3N2 does not have a precise antiviral therapy; nonetheless, the symptoms can be controlled using rest, fluids, and doctor-prescribed drugs. One should not use self-medication. Worse still, the patient might be hospitalised, particularly when he/she experience difficulties in breathing and other underlying health conditions.
Doctors advise taking into consideration the following measures to mitigate the chance of contracting the H3N2 virus:
Above all, the doctor urges people to seek timely medical care instead of self-medicating, because early intervention can make all the difference.
Wearing masks, washing hands, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and boosting immunity can help.
Children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weak immunity or chronic illnesses are more vulnerable.
It spreads through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and also via contaminated surfaces.
