Grain-fed vs organic chicken – which is better?

The meat section in a supermarket spoils you for choices. You will find a range of grass-fed, grain-fed and organic meats too. Does it really matter? Yes, it obviously does. Choosing the right kind of poultry or chicken decides whether you are eating healthy or not. If you are conscious about nutrition and consuming good fats, then you must consider understanding which type of chicken is good for you. Organic chicken or meat means that the birds are fed with only organically certified products. There is no trace of animal by-products, chemicals, pesticides or fertilisers in the grains or grass they are fed . The birds are also raised in natural environments and not given any kind of antibiotics or drugs. Genetically engineered grains are also prohibited in their feed. Grain-fed chicken is not unhealthy. However, it may be exposed to genetically engineered grains that are sprayed with fertilizers or pesticides. They may also be exposed to unhygienic environments that may affect their health. The birds are usually fed with a mix of wheat, corn and barley. Rice and soy can also be added to their diet. If the birds are fed only grains, the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids in them reduces. Their nutrition levels are low as compared to organic chicken. Read: Brown eggs vs white eggs which is healthier?

Organic-fed chicken has less toxins, less fat and has better flavour and more tenderness as compared to grain-fed chicken. It also includes more CLA s and omega 3 fatty acids. Hence, organic chicken must be preferred over the grain-fed variety. Here s why organic food is better for your health.
