The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently published a report concerning the global cholera statistics for the year 2023. According to the data, there has been a significant increase in cases and deaths in 2023 as compared to 2022. The number of death cases reportedly increased by 71 per cent and the number of cases increased by 13 per cent. On a global scale, more than 4000 people died in 2023 from a preventable and treatable disease. Cholera cases and deaths were reported from 35 countries in 2021, 44 countries in 2022 and 45 countries in 2023 citing an obvious increase in the disease. Majority of the cases were reported from children under the age of 5.

As defined by the WHO, cholera is an acute intestinal infection which typically spreads from contaminated water and food. The areas that are most affected usually have very poor sanitation, hygiene, plagues by natural disasters and have limited access to proper healthcare.

What Contributed To Cholera Cases In 2023?

According to WHO report, there are a number of reasons which have served as the main contributors to both cholera cases and fatalities globally. Some of them are: climate change, conflicts in the region, inadequate safe water availability, poor sanitation, underdevelopment, poverty and large scale population displacement which were caused by emerging and re-emerging conflicts as well as natural disasters.

It is important to mention the fact that there has also been a major shift in the geographical distribution of cholera cases on a global scale. For instance, WHO report cites that from 2022 to 2023, there has been reportage of 32 per cent decrease of cases from Asia and Middle East, and a 125 per cent increase of cases from the African countries.
