First aid for various types of eye injuries

Injuries are always sudden and being equipped with first aid techniques comes handy at all times. Eye injuries can be very critical as eyes are delicate and sensitive. If not attended to correctly and in time, a simple eye injury can also lead to vision loss. Preventive care is important for people involved in work which could pose a risk to eyes such as welders and people working on grinding machines, these people should always wear protective glasses at work as prevention is better than cure suggests Dr Rishab Chand Consultant and head of Eye department Nayati multi super specialty hospital, Mathura. He further shares with you the type of eye injuries and the first aid to be followed in each case: The common symptoms which occur after eye injury are:

  • Pain
  • Decreased vision
  • Watering of eyes
  • Difficulty in opening of eyes

Injury due to foreign particle entering the eye A foreign particle, object or speck like a piece of metal or glass might enter the eye accidentally. In such a case:

  • Do not rub the eye
  • Check whether the foreign particle is visible on white part of eye
  • In this case, pull the upper lid down and blink repeatedly to remove the particle
  • Wash the eye with cold water to get rid of the speck
  • Do not use tweezers, nails or fingers to remove it
  • If all this does not help, bandage the eye lightly and consult eye doctor
  • Also, if the particle is on the cornea, do not try to remove it. Consult a doctor immediately

Injury due to chemicals entering the eye Chemicals can splash in your eyes at work or home. In such a case:

  • Calm the person and ask them not to close their eyes. Doing so can lead to chemicals getting trapped in the eye which shall cause further damage.
  • Immediately wash the eyes with water continuously for at least 15 to 30 minutes
  • Get medical help while you are doing this
  • Do not rub or bandage your eyes

Injury due to a blow or hit on the eye This is common in children when playing with a ball or can also occur in adults if an object hits the eye accidentally. In such a case:

  • Use a cold compress on the eye lightly. Do not use an ice cube directly on the eye. Wrap it in a cloth before doing so
  • You can then use a warm compress from the next day to soothe the bruises.
  • If you are unable to open your eyes, have a blurry vision or eye pain, consult a doctor immediately
