Dr. Narander Singla, Lead Consultant in Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, says that some small symptoms that appear on our hands may indicate early warning signs related to fatty liver disease. A disease that is emerging at a high risk of health issues for people of different age groups, especially also including those who do not consume alcohol. Fatty liver might not always remain silent; it can show itself through the skin, and in many cases, it signals through the hands. Said Dr Singla.

Hand Warning Signs That May Indicate Liver Problems

Your hands depict early warning signs that may suggest something is wrong deep inside your body, especially with your liver. One of the first signs that is seen through the hands is palmar erythema, or reddening of the palms. Palmar erythema is caused by changes in the blood flow and in hormones that occur when the liver fails, said Dr. Narander Singla, Lead Consultant Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi.

Aside from the Palmar erythema, there may be some other subtle signs of fatty liver involving your hands:-

  • Itchy skin, especially on the hands, is caused by bile salts that accumulate in your blood.
  • Skin becomes fragile and dry, which causes easy bruising,
  • Spider angiomas lead to tiny, red, spider-like blood vessels, which are noticed on the hands, arms or face, and are caused by an increase in estrogen levels.
  • Finger Clubbing occurs when the fingers are swollen and rounded, which may be due to a lack of oxygen in the blood.

What are the Home Remedies to Prevent Liver Damage?

The best way to combat fatty liver disease typically starts with some easy life changes:

  1. Lose Weight Gradually - even a 5-10% loss in weight can make a huge improvement in the liver's health.
  2. Consume a Liver-Supportive Diet eating fibre-rich foods, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats are the core components of any diet supportive to the liver.
  3. Reduce the intake of Sugar and processed foods these items contribute to the fat storage in and around the liver.
  4. Avoid Alcohol as it is the main input for Pro-Inflammatory to the liver
  5. Move more and perform physical activities that can help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce fat cells.

Symptoms include redness or itching, unusual change in colour can help you identify liver problems early. The occurrence of non-alcoholic fatty liver has increased to a vast extent in recent years due to poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, and metabolic disorders. Adopting a nutritious diet, regular exercise and incorporating some changes in daily routine can help in eliminating the chronic disease.
