Indigestion is a common problem, especially in summer. It's not just the heat, but also the body's Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which being on the lower side, makes it difficult to digest certain foods, causing an uneasy feeling. How should one fight indigestion?
Answering that is Dr Sachin Jhawar, director, clinical services, Apex hospital, who suggests, 'Eating in excess causes indigestion. So, I always prescribe to eat smaller portions during summers. Secondly, anything that is kept outside the refrigerator for a while, should be avoided, especially milk and milk products. Try eating fresh.' Carbohydrates and oily foods also come in his list. Jhawar explains, 'The body's BMR is slightly lower during this time. Hence, carbohydrates and fried food cause a bloated feeling.' Warning those who are regular on alcohol, the gastroenterologist informs that alcohol causes dehydration, apart from indigestion and stomach upset. Thus, one should consume adequate water along with alcohol.
Dr Manaswi Gautam, consultant psychiatrist at Gautam hospital and research centre, attributes stress as a cause of acidity, which in turn causes indigestion. Three major causes of acidity, in his words are, hurry, worry and curry. He says, 'Acidity is mainly caused due eating in a hurry, consuming spicy food and anxiety or tension.' What are the remedies? Advises the doctor, 'Lead a stress-free life. This can be done by having an organised lifestyle. We should space out our daily schedule in a way, so that we get enough breathing space.' Gautam explains that by saying, 'By pressurising ourselves in our daily routine, we create a pressure on our digestive system, which the natural hormones of our body cannot fight.' He also suggests doing yoga and meditation to combat stress.
Despite all precautions, if you still feel a little heavy, then worry not. For Chef Gaurav Narayan of Four points by Sheraton, offers a couple of digestive mocktails. He suggests, 'Spicy Frappe can be made with sprite, lemon juice, mint, chat masala and rock salt. Mango smothie can be made by blending yoghurt, pieces of fresh mango, sugar syrup, milk and honey. These help indigestion.' So, it's time to say goodbye indigestion and enjoy the season by being healthy and happy.
