Eating right is one of the most effective ways of managing diabetes. Diabetics should understand how to manage diabetes with the right diet. Dr. Aastha Sharma, Dietitian at Nayati Hospital, Mathura shares with us a diet plan especially designed for diabetics. You can also follow these expert exercise tips to manage diabetes better.

Daily food requirement for diabetics

  • Milk and milk products: 500ml
  • Cereals: 150gm
  • Pulses and Legumes: 30gm
  • Green leafy vegetables: 400gm
  • Other vegetables: 100gm
  • Fruits: 250gm
  • Oil: 15gm
  • Nuts: 8gm
  • Non-vegetarian: 30gm

One day menu plan for diabetics

  • 6.00 am early morning: tea/coffee/milk(1 cup no sugar) + 2 biscuits (oats/ragi)
  • 8.00 am breakfast: daliya porridge/oats /upma/idili sambhar /plain dosa /brown bread sandwich+ milk /roti-2+ vegetable/sprouts
  • 10.00 am mid-morning: apple/papaya/guava/pear/watermelon,orange/coconut water/butter milk
  • 12:30 pm lunch: 2 misi roti/brown rice (small bowl)+ 1 bowl vegetable+1 bowl dal+curd+ salad/tandoori chicken- 2 small pcs / 2-pcs fish
  • 4.00 pm: tea/coffee/ vegetable soup/ butter milk /boiled vegetable/fruits
  • 8.00 pm dinner: 1 roti+1 bowl vegetable + 20gm dal+ 15 gm curd + plenty of salad/ 1 pcs fish /1 pcs chicken +salad
  • 10.00 pm bed time: milk -1 cup

Note: The above diet plan is a general recommendation which further needs to be customised according to individual needs. Here are 10 healthy resolutions every diabetic must follow.

What to eat and what to avoid

Fruits

EAT apple, papaya, pear, guava.

AVOID mango, banana, chiku, grapes, pineapple. Also don't drink fruit juices and milkshakes.

Salad EAT

EAT cucumber,carrot, raddish, onion, lettuce, tomato.

AVOID dressings on salad.

Milk

EAT double tonned milk and milk products (butter milk /paneer/curd).

AVOID full cream milk and buffalo milk.

Cereals

EAT misi roti, brown rice, brown bread, biscuit (oats/ragi), bajra porridge and wheat porridge

AVOID cereals, maida, suji, white rice, white bread, biscuits.

Pulses and legumes

EAT legumes for lunch (chole, rajma, lobia, chickpeas).

Vegetables

EAT all green leafy vegetables (palak, methi, sarson, bathua), lauki, ridge gourd, tinda, parwal.

AVOID potato, arbi, sweet potato.

Non-vegetarian

EAT egg white, chicken, lean meat, fish.

AVOID egg yolk, red meat, fried chicken and fish.

Oil and fats

EAT olive, sunflower, saffola, mustard.

AVOID vanaspati ghee, butter, desi ghee.

Sugar is a complete no-no. Avoid sugar, sweets, jaggery, honey, jam, jelly and ice-cream.
