Expert advice on coping with joint pain during monsoon

Do you experience discomfort in your joints during monsoon? Here's what you need to do.

Isn t it strange that some people can sense the monsoon coming when their joints start aching? Joint pain during monsoons is a common phenomenon. Did you know there are 15 other causes of joint pains besides arthritis? It is obviously serious in case of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. However, in healthy individuals, experiencing joint pain during monsoons is not something one should be worried about. We asked Dr Ameet Pispati, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Jaslok Hospital the reason for this pain and how to prevent it. Change in weather and temperature leads to a stiffness in the muscles and the lining of the joints also known as joint capsules. When the joint capsules stiffen, one experiences discomfort and pain in the various joints like the knee, hips and even fingers at times. People aged above 60 years are more prone to it. Even the young adults with a sedentary lifestyle experience such pain in the joints during the rainy season. Here s how your sedentary lifestyle takes a toll on your bones. Prevention

The best way to prevent it is through exercise. Regular stretching exercises and daily physical activity will keep such discomfort at bay. Stretching twice a day is highly recommended. Try these early morning stretching exercises. If you are sitting for long hours, ensure you stand up and walk every half an hour. Sitting in an air-conditioned environment aggravates the pain. Hence, make it a point to get up and walk a few steps every 40 minutes. You can also try some office yoga or stretches. Stay fit in office with these expert-recommended exercises and tips.

In case of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis patients, consulting the doctor if your pain aggravates is a must. Your current medication may require modification. Some disease modifying drugs may be prescribed by your doctor if need be. Do not ignore the discomfort or pain. Maintaining an optimum temperature of about 22 degrees Celsius can help in relieving the discomfort. Consume light and easy to digest foods and natural diuretics during this season. You do not need diuretic supplements. Gentle massaging with herbal oils also provides relief. You can use these Ayurvedic oils for relieving joint pain.

When to see the doctor

If the joint pain persists for 3 weeks or more or aggravates, consulting a doctor is advised. The doctor may advice a few blood tests to identify the cause and physiotherapy or other lifestyle modifications may be recommended accordingly.
