5 everyday habits that may give you varicose veins

Changes in lifestyle have led to change in our everyday habits as well. While some of these habits may be good, some are definitely a cause for concern. Some of the habits we have come to adopt have affected our lives to the extent of becoming the cause of a number of lifestyle diseases. One of these conditions and cause of concern is varicose veins. In this condition, the veins especially those in legs might get enlarged or twisted. Hence, it is important to understand this condition as it may lead to severe pain at times. 1. Standing for long hours

This is a habit that might be more of a requirement of your job. Standing in one spot for long hours may cause varicose veins. This can be helped if you try and walk around more often than staying put in one place. Standing at the same spot for longer hours puts an undue stress on the veins leading to the blood getting collected in them. This causes the walls of the veins to weaken further damaging the valves.

2. Sitting for long hours

While standing at the same spot is not advisable, neither is sitting at your desk for long hours. This is a habit that develops out of necessity as most of our jobs involve sitting at the desk for long hours. While we are aware of the many unhealthy effects of sitting continuously for long hours, not many know that varicose veins is one of them. It is a good idea to take breaks from sitting at regular intervals and walk around a bit all through the day.

3. Wearing high heels

Here is an evil that we are increasingly becoming aware of, but are reluctant to let go of. When we walk, the calf muscles act like a pump to help the blood flow in the veins. Walking around in high heels freezes the calves in this position hence the blood isn t pumped efficiently leading to stagnation and then enlarged veins. 4. High salt intake

We all enjoy a savoury snack from time to time, but a high salt intake on a regular basis leads to a high water retention. This increases the pressure on the veins and causes them to enlarge, eventually developing into varicose veins.

5. Crossing your legs

Varicose veins might not a critical illness but it sure is a big annoyance that might lead to more severe health issues later in life. It is a good idea to keep this points in mind and to consult a specialist in case the problem does show up.
