Urinary tract infections or UTIs, generally caused due to bacterial infections are more common in women than in men. This clinical condition that is normally treated with antibiotics can be effectively prevented with some powerful natural remedies like lemon or nimbu. Drinking a glass of lemon juice and practising hygiene is more than enough to prevent UTIs naturally. Read about 8 reasons to go crazy about lemons!

Beginning your day with a glass of warm lemon juice is the best way as it alkalises and cleanses the body, including the urinary tract. Rich in vitamin C — an antioxidant — lemons can flush the bacterial toxins from the body and thus help in removing the infectious bacteria from the bladder. Lime juice also causes the pH of the blood and urinary tract to change from acidic to alkaline thereby hindering the growth of these opportunistic bacteria.

Lemon acts as a diuretic agent – encouraging the urinary bladder to expel more urine frequently and thus, increasing the chances of the bacteria to move out of the body. Also drinking its juice on a daily basis is found to aid in prevention of recurring urinary tract infections by altering the acid and sugar-rich environment that promotes the bacterial growth.

Tips:

  • Squeeze the juice of half of a lemon into a cup of warm water and drink it every morning till your urinary tract infections are gone.
  • Add lemon juice to iced teas, green teas or water with mint, ginger and honey.
  • Use fresh lime juice as a salad dressing.
