10 do’s and don’ts you need to follow after cataract surgery

Your doctor might advise you to avoid direct sun exposure and wear dark glasses. Here’s how to protect your eyes from the sun.But these are not the only ways in which you need to protect your eyes. Dr Rajesh Mishra, Consultant, Cataract and Glaucoma Clinic, Advanced Eye hospital, Vashi shares some tips that everyone must follow after cataract surgery. Also Read - Do you have diabetes? Do s after the surgery

  1. Don t forget to take your eye drops as scheduled and recommended by your ophthalmologist to prevent eye problems like itching or watering.
  2. After you go back home you should not restrict yourself from performing your regular day-to-day activities. However, ensure you don t indulge in strenuous activities. You can resume simple actions like reading, writing, watching TV and walking.
  3. Exercise is good for health and your eyes as well. But try to keep it light because excessive strain can affect your eyes too.
  4. Wear your protective eye covering all throughout the day even while you sleep. Avoid sleeping on the side that has been operated on as it might put pressure on the operated eye after the surgery. Read more about cataract surgeries and understand the different types.
  5. If you fear that water while bathing might enter your eyes then close your eyes during a bath and shower.

Don ts after the surgery

  1. Never rub your eye or splash water in your eye as it might increase the chance of infection. If anything enters your eye or it starts itching, better consult your ophthalmologist immediately.
  2. Don t swim or use a hot tub for a bath, for at least 2 weeks after the cataract surgery as even water entering your eyes might lead to infections. Here are 9 interesting things your eyes reveal about your health.
  3. Avoid driving for at least 24 hours after the surgery as it might strain the eye.
  4. Stay away from practising any strenuous physical activity, especially bending and lifting heavy weight or gymming for few days.
  5. Don t wear any eye make-up (even if it is a herbal one) until you consult your ophthalmologist.
