Are you suffering from varicose veins? If yes, then bookmark this link as it sheds light on common do's and don'ts one should follow. This is because varicose veins can lead to accumulation of blood in veins and blood vessels, especially in the lower part of the abdomen. And if left ignored, it can lead to bleeding, ulcers and even infections, which may not heal quickly. Hence, Dr Pradip Shah, Consultant Physician, Fortis Hospital, Mumbai has shared few tips that can help you in living with varicose veins.
Here's what you have to do:
1. Do take intermittent breaks (say every 2 - 3 hours) if you have to spend most of your time standing. In such a case, sit on a chair and put your leg on a table. Also read about swelling +4 symptoms of varicose veins you should know
2. Do wear stockings without fail as it aids in improving blood flow and avoid the tendency to be varicosity (a swollen and engorged vein). This is because, if you suffer from varicose veins, the collagen tissue is weak and more elastic, which makes it more prone to injury and bleeding. So it is important to ensure that there is proper blood flow. If you have a desk job, take flights frequently or have a standing job, it is advised to wear stockings.
3. Exercise regularly as it not helps in improving circulation but also helps in maintaining your weight under control. This is because, excessive weight can put additional pressure on the legs and hence, further increase your risk of injury and other health problems like bleeding and infections.
4. Do opt for flats and low-heeled shoes as it helps in lowering the pressure put on the legs while walking. Also, stay away from wearing high heels as it puts additional strain on the calf, which can further aggravate your condition. Here's more on varicose veins you need to know.
Don'ts that you must follow
1. Do not stand for long hours at a single place as it can hinder blood flow leading to scarcity of blood to the extremities further aggravating the pain. The rule applies to people who spend most of the time standing like traffic police and receptionist. If you have to stand for long hours, then shift your weight on one leg and then after few minutes on the other, such that only of the legs bear all your weight at one time. You can even take a short walk and stand on your toes or stretch your legs to ease the pressure on the feet.
2. Do not cross your legs while sitting as it might further hinder the blood flow and make the condition worse. Instead, you should keep your legs at an elevated position or on a pillow when resting as it aids in improving blood flow to the extremities.
3. Do not sit at a single place for extended periods of time without a break. Make sure you get up from your seat every few minutes and take a short walk every 30 - 45 minutes, if possible to lower varicose veins from further worsening.
4. Do not opt for ointments and natural remedies without consulting your doctor. This is because varicose veins are caused due to a weakening of the valves and restrict blood flow, which is an internal condition. And hence, this condition has to be treated clinically. Stop believing that varicose veins will go away with the use of herbal remedies and ointments. However, home remedies can provide some relief. Here are 7 home remedies to beat varicose veins
