Autoimmune disorders in children: There are many diseases that affect children, who are also able to quickly recover from them since their immune systems are strong. It is, therefore, recommended that parents ensure their children are healthy -- not just in the body, but also the mind -- by giving them proper meals, encouraging them to stay physically active, reducing their screen-time, among other things, so as to prevent autoimmune disorders, which are on the rise among kids between the ages of 10 years and 16 years, a trend that is alarming even the doctors. According to health experts, genetics, environmental, and lifestyle factors -- including changes in diet, exposure to pollutants, and rising stress -- can be the causes of these health problems that can only be dealt and managed with timely intervention. Read on to find out more.
Dr Amit Gupta, senior neonatologist and paediatrician at Motherhood Hospitals, Noida points out that there is a concerning surge in autoimmune disorders such as type 1 diabetes, juvenile arthritis, and celiac disease among children in the age group of 10-16 years due to changing lifestyles. "There is a need for awareness and lifestyle modifications to help manage these conditions effectively," the doctor says.
Dr Gupta explains that autoimmune disorders occur when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells, leading to chronic inflammation. "Common autoimmune diseases in children include type 1 diabetes, juvenile arthritis, celiac disease, and lupus. These cases are now seen in the age group of 10-16 years."
According to the doctor, genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, along with unhealthy changes in diet, exposure to pollutants, and rising stress levels are some of the factors behind the surge in cases.
"Increased exposure to processed foods, environmental factors like pollution and chemical exposure, absence of physical activity, overuse of antibiotics, and high-stress levels from academic pressure may all play a role in altering the immune system's response," the doctor warns.
The expert adds that five out of 20 children visit hospitals with symptoms of fatigue, joint pain, digestive issues, unexplained weight loss or gain, skin rashes, and frequent infections. There is a 10 per cent spike in autoimmune disorders in children, and it requires timely intervention. "If left untreated, these disorders can lead to complications such as organ damage, developmental delays, and an increased risk of other chronic illnesses."
The doctor states that a 'tailor made treatment plan' includes medications, dietary modifications consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to improve the overall well-being of the patient.
"A well-balanced, anti-inflammatory diet rich in whole foods, getting sufficient sleep, being regular with physical activity, and managing stress with techniques like mindfulness or yoga can help reduce the risk of autoimmune disorders."
It is crucial that parents stay in touch with doctors and follow their guidelines. By increasing awareness and with early intervention, children with autoimmune disorders can lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
