  • Treating sinusitis with over-the-counter painkillers – Over-the-counter painkillers help inreducing inflammation to some extent and provide relief from pain. However, before using OTC painkillers, it is a good idea to know about the potential side effects and interactions with other drugs.
  • Use over-the-counter decongestant nasal sprays or drops – Over-the-counter decongestant nasal sprays or drops help in relieving nasal congestion and draining secretions. But they should never be bought over-the-counter and should be taken only on prescription by a medical practitioner. Overuse of OTC nasal sprays or drops can lead to a condition called rhinitis medicamentosa.

Nasal sprays contain chemicals that shrink congested blood vessels. This is how the clogged passages open up. As one applies these sprays directly to the nose, they get quick relief. However, in a few days, the blood vessels may not respond to the medication anymore and thecycle can continue for months or years. • Applying warm packs to the face is helpful – Yes, warm packs and steam inhalation can help to some extent. Inhaling steam or applying warm packs works as a great natural expectorant. With an increase in the body temperature, the blood vessels start dilating thus aiding enhanced blood flow and better circulation. Better circulation is proven to be beneficial in colds, headaches, and migraines. A rise in the body temperature also stimulates the immune system.
  • Corticosteroid drops or sprays work to treat sinusitis – Corticosteroid drops or sprays effectively treat chronic sinusitis. These help in bringing down allergic response and inflammation. These should never be used over-the-counter and taken only under medical prescription. These should also not be taken in infective sinusitis.
  • In some cases, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is performed – FESS is an endoscopic procedure done under local/general anaesthesia, depending upon the condition of the patient and severity of the problem. It helps in improving the drainage of sinuses, reducing the load of disease, and improving the penetration of the medicines in the sinus cavity. It is a minimally invasive procedure. The area that is most frequently dealt with is called the ostiomeatal unit. Steer clear of using nasal sprays as they can bring vicious cycle for sinusitis patients – Nasal spray decongestants can lead to the risk of rebound congestion due to overuse. In some people, it can become a vicious cycle of overuse and dependence and eventually, addiction. This is because once the spray has been used for three or four days continuously, it can cause the nasal linings to swell up again, even when the cold or attack of sinusitis or allergy that originally caused the problem has passed. Nasal sprays can also make the infection worse if given without an antibiotic cover. Thus, it is recommended to use nasal sprays only under medical supervision. Read more Suffering from sinusitis?
