Hi, I am a 45-year-old man leading an active lifestyle. I recently went for a routine health check-up. My blood pressure levels were 130/80 mmHg. Do I suffer from hypertension (as the normal blood pressure levels are 120/80 mmHg)? Can it be controlled with diet and exercise or should I need to take medications? Please help.
Your blood pressure levels are within the borderline hypertension range. The Indian guidelines for hypertension indicate that blood pressure less than 130/85 mmHg is borderline hypertension while BP between 130-139/85-89 falls in the prehypertension range. But, if your blood pressure is more than 140-159 /90-99, it indicates stage 1 hypertension and the levels above 160/100 mmHg signifies stage 2 hypertension. It is important to know your numbers as blood pressure more than 130/80 mmHg should be taken seriously.
According to Dr Sanjeev Chaudhary, Associate Director & Unit Head, Cardiology, FMRI, Gurgaon, The blood pressure levels of people with mild hypertension can be controlled with simple lifestyle and dietary changes. And if the levels cannot be controlled with these measures, then medication might be recommended. You can also try these natural alternatives for high blood pressure medications.
