Healthy DIY alternative for air fresheners

This homemade air freshener will last you a month!

Stepping into a fragrant home is such a welcome change. The stores are full of options ranging from sprays to diffusers and aroma oils, air fresheners, potpourri and more to make the indoors smell good and fresh. These can be expensive if you want to use it throughout the year. So why not make your own home fragrance with simple and not so expensive ingredients!

You need

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 sheet unflavoured gelatin
  • Essential oil of your choice
  • Empty cup/jar
  • Food colouring (optional)

Method

  • Boil 1 cup water. Add a stick of cinnamon or some cloves to it. Boil it until it reduces to half a cup and is spiced well.
  • Now add the gelatin and stir well to avoid lumps.
  • Add the remaining cup of water and 1 tsp essential oil. You may add 2 drops of food colouring at this stage if you want your gel freshener to be colourful. Here s a list of 6 essential oils you must have in your medicine cabinet.
  • Mix well and pour it in the jar or bowl or cup you want to store it in. Let it set for 4 hours.
  • Your fragrance is ready. Place it in any corner of your home.
  • The fragrance lasts for 4-5 weeks. If you observe it wearing out just give the gel a little stir with a fork to emanate the smell.

Tips:

  • You can use this freshener is cars and bathrooms too. Do you want to smell good all day? Follow these tips.
  • A bigger room will require 2 cups placed in opposite corners for better fragrance.
  • Mix and match the essential oils and spices for better fragrances. E.g. mix clove and orange or cinnamon and vanilla.
  • You can skip the spices if you want to use only essential oils. In that case, bring half cup of water to a boil and add gelatin.
  • The gelatin should be kept out of reach for children.
