In chemotherapy the cancer cells in the body are attacked and killed to help one cope with the condition and live a cancer-free life. Unfortunately, the therapy can also kill some healthy cells and cause side effects such as loss of appetite, low immunity, fatigue, dry mouth and sore throat. A nutritious diet can help you cope with the treatment and maintain weight at the same time. We got tips from Niti Desai, a popular South Mumbai-based nutritionist to deal with chemotherapy. Also, remember these dos and don'ts during chemotherapy.
It is critical to stay hydrated. Keep track of your liquid intake. Drink a lot of water to flush out toxins and chemotherapy drugs. Also, coconut water is excellent for boosting immunity and releasing toxins.
Your appetite goes for a toss after the first session, so, eat foods rich in vitamin C to boost your appetite. It is always better that you stick to soft foods like rice, dal, khichdi and buttermilk that are not only easy to chew but are also easy to digest.
You need protein to repair damaged cells so it is evident that you will need more than usual dose of it during chemo sessions. Consume milk-based items to get the necessary protein. However, remember to avoid unpasteurized dairy products to reduce the risk of food poisoning. You can also prepare clear chicken soup or add chunks of an omelette into the soup.
Since your immunity is already low, it is best to avoid raw foods. Don't have chutneys or salads. Stick to home cooked foods only.
Bananas and pears are good when you suffer from diarrhoea. Peaches can be good option if you have dry mouth or throat. Also, eat a lot of berries as they are loaded with antioxidants. Wash the fruits properly so as not to get the stomach bug and also avoid fruit with skin.
Eat dark-coloured vegetables as they are loaded with antioxidants. Radish, beetroot and kale can be good options.
Eat a handful of nuts every day. Walnuts and almonds are rich sources of iron that will help beat anaemia.
Go easy on tea. Stick to green tea as it has a lot of antioxidants.
Drink a glass of wheatgrass juice every day. It contains chlorophyll which will help in the production of haemoglobin.
