With the increasing cases of swine flu in Delhi and Mumbai, it goes without saying that the need to raise awareness is mandatory to prevent its spread. And this is where the role of diagnosis comes into play. However, when it comes to diagnosis and testing, we feel that that Private hospitals rank higher than Government hospitals. But is there any difference between the two with regards to the diagnosis of swine flu? Do Government hospitals charge less than the private hospitals? Swine flu test kit: When it comes to the diagnosis of swine flu at Government and private hospitals, both the centres use well-regulated kits and protocol as per standards. The tests have to be done only with a valid prescription. The testing process has to be as per CDC guidelines, and testing kits have to be approved by Government. Swine flu test at home: The only difference between the two is with regards to the services provided to the patients. In the case of Government diagnostic centres, the patients have to walk-in to get the test done, whereas, for private centres, home services are available, which are convenient. The private centres, also work around the clock for 365 days, so the delivery of reports is expected to be faster as compared to government diagnostic centres. Unlike Government hospitals, private centres do provide telephonic enquiry option and give reports by the phone.
Swine flu diagnostic test in India: The swine flu test is a molecular diagnostic test that looks for the DNA of the H1N1 virus. However, a patient should keep in mind that the test should be done at an authorised centre. Overall, the Government has authorised 7 - 8 centres to test swine flu in India. Hence, you must only get it done at these centres as the results obtained from these centres are mostly accurate. There are no false positive or false negative results. Also, you should not do the test until the doctor has asked you to do as most people panic and get the test done out of sheer fear.
Do I need to prepare for swine flu testing?: No preparation is needed for a patient which includes fasting as well. However, the person going for the collection of the blood sample, handling the samples and doing the tests are a vaccinated. These people are also advised to wear proper gown and mask and ensure they are fully protected. However, here are 15 precautions every Indian should take to prevent swine flu.
Swine flu test cost: As far as the cost of diagnosis is concerned, Government hospitals charge less as compared to private hospitals. The cost of swine flu testing as per government regulation/notification is Rs 4500, which is followed by authorised centres.
