Festivals are the good times, moments of excitement and joy celebrated with presents, delicious food, and much more! But for people with diabetes, festivities can feel like a test of willpower. Staying away from all the goodies, especially during social gatherings, is difficult. Hence, many find themselves wondering, "Can diabetics enjoy festivals?" The answer is a resounding YES! Pramod Tripathi, founder of Freedom from Diabetes, states, "With caution and mindful food choices, you can enjoy the celebrations without compromising your health.

Here are some practical tips to help you navigate the festive season safely and happily:

  1. Mind Portion Sizes: This is the golden rule for managing diabetes during festivals. Eating mindfully and slowly gives your body time to respond, satisfying you with less food. Use smaller plates and take modest portions of your favourite dishes. Remember that portion control helps prevent blood sugar spikes.
  2. Avoid Sweets Made with Refined Sugar: Traditional sweets containing refined sugar can spike blood sugar levels. Therefore, consider healthier alternatives, such as sweets made with stevia, jaggery, or dates, and enjoy them in moderation. These natural sweeteners are low in the glycemic index, which helps prevent rapid blood sugar increases.
  3. Skip Refined Products: Refined carbs like white rice, maida, and sugary treats can cause rapid blood sugar spikes. To stabilise your sugar levels, replace them with whole-grain options like brown rice, quinoa, or millet, and include fibre-rich foods like legumes and vegetables.
  4. Add Dry Fruits and Nuts: Dry fruits and nuts make great festive snacks. Almonds, walnuts, and pistachios provide healthy fats and natural sweetness without negatively impacting blood sugar. These nutrient-dense foods are also high in fibre, which helps manage hunger and stabilize blood sugar throughout the day.
  5. Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration maintains healthy blood sugar levels, improves digestion and reduces cravings for sweets. Drink plenty of water and try adding Sabja (basil) or chia seeds for an added health boost. Herbal teas like cinnamon tea or green tea are also excellent alternatives to sugary drinks.
  6. Snack Smartly: Sugar, which contributes to weight gain and blood sugar spikes. Replace fried snacks with healthier options like roasted nuts, baked dishes, or even air-popped popcorn. These choices are just as festive and delicious without being calorie bombs.
  7. No Meal Skipping: Avoiding meals eventually results in excessive eating later in the day, leading to a sudden increase in blood sugar levels. Keep to your regular meals, and if you have to do with an occasion like a party or gathering from family, eat a small, well-balanced snack beforehand, so you won't have the chance to overindulge.
  8. Exercise and Stay Active: Staying active during the festive season is essential. It helps the body use insulin better and lowers blood sugar levels. You don't have to go overboard; even a 30-minute walk can help normalize blood sugar levels. If you attend a happy gathering, some movement on the day, like dancing, walking, or even light stretches, can be significant.
  9. Moderation is Key: Festivals are all about having fun with the flavours without stress. Balancing indulgence with caution allows you to enjoy your time without feeling deprived.
