If you are a non-diabetic, you do not have to think twice before zeroing down a footwear that you like. However, if you are diabetic, then undoubtedly you have to be extra cautious while buying a footwear. Investing a footwear that is too tight or very loose, can make you prone to injury and thus, its complications. So to help you out in opting a proper footwear, we have asked Dr Tushar D Rege, Diabetic foot surgeon, M.S. (Mum). Fellowship in Diabetic Foot Surgery (MUHS), Mumbai to suggest few tips you need to keep in mind while buying footwear. Here's what he has to say.

1. It is recommended to be purchased in the evening. This is because, during the course of the day, the feet swell, which helps you in choosing the right fit and not pick a tight one. The rule not only applies for diabetics but for everyone. Here's more on what is right time to buy shoes?

2. While buying shoes or footwear, it is important to wear the footwear and check the size which is comfortable. Once you find a comfortable footwear, order a size bigger than the one that fits you perfectly. This is because the space within the footwear helps in the free play of the toes.

3. Make sure that the footwear should have a toe box, which is broad and spacious. Do not buy a footwear with a tapering end around the toes, high-heels and those that expose your heels or toes as it can put you at risk of infections.

4. Choose thick cotton socks. It not only takes care of the sweat and moisture but also swelling. It also prevents you from any infections due to sweating and also an injury or shoe bite. Here are 7 tips for diabetics to reduce swelling in the feet.

5. Moreover, you can use soft insoles to prevent foot injury due to shoes. However, while picking one make sure it is comfortable and not too hard.

Note: If you experience any foot injury due to wearing wrong shoes or if you suffer a foot infection, which fails to heal, please seek immediate medical attention. Any delay in getting the treatment can cause the infection to spread or make you vulnerable to infection (if you have an injury), increasing your risk of diabetic gangrene.
