Did you know one in 12 Indians is pre-diabetic? Given these scary statistics, we still wait for the symptoms of diabetes to appear first then get a regular health check-up done. And this might be the reason why India is becoming the diabetes capital of the world. Read about currently available treatments for diabetes which include oral medications, insulin and other methods. With so many patients who are being treated for diabetes, is there going to be a cure for diabetes or a way to reverse diabetes in the near future allopathy? Here is what Dr Pradeep Gadge, Diabetologist, Shreya Diabetes Centre, Mumbai has to say:

Is there a cure for diabetes?

Unfortunately, as of now, there is no cure for diabetes in allopathy and other forms of medicine as well. But if a person is newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and is been aggressively treated in an early stage, then there is a chance that diabetes can go into remission i.e. it can be reversed. Although it is very difficult, there is a possibility that diabetes can be reversed at least for few years.

As far as a cure is concerned, for certain types of diabetes, there is a possibility to get a cure in the near future. For example, there is a process known as islets cell transplantation. In this procedure, the pancreatic cells of a dead person are taken and infused in a diabetic patient. These cells start to produce insulin in the diabetic patient, which can help cure diabetes. However, these studies are still in experimental stages and hence, there is a hope for the cure in the near future.

There is a second concept related to diabetes cure which is in the research stage. There are certain bacteria in the intestine which can cause diabetes and there are other types of bacteria which can help stop or prevent diabetes. These bacteria are known as gut microbiota, such as Methanobrevibacter smithii, which is known to cause diabetes. Also, read about tips to prevent diabetes.

So in near future, there is a possibility that having a pill loaded with this microbiota can help you to either prevent or cure diabetes. These studies are done in mice and the response has been positive, so human trials are on the block. However, it might not be an option for all type 2 diabetic patients as only a subset or certain types of diabetics can benefit from these future treatments of diabetes.
