Diabetes On The Rise In India: 1 In 2 People Tested Found With High Blood Sugar Levels
In an eye-opening report that analysed nationwide data from across different Indian cities, it has emerged that 1 in 2 people showed high blood sugar, which points danger of increasing cases of diabetes in India.
World Diabetes Day 2025: Diabetes is a concerning health risk that is increasing rapidly across the world. It is a medical condition that occurs when your blood vessels do not make enough insulin or use it sufficiently.
In an eye-opening report that analysed nationwide data from across different Indian cities, it has emerged that 1 in 2 people showed high blood sugar, which points danger of increasing cases of diabetes in India. The report is now published in PharmEasy ahead of World Diabetes Day 2025, which falls on November 14.
Scientists Examined 29 Indian States And UT Reports
Researchers after examining over 4 million diagnostic reports and 19 million medication orders from across 29 Indian states and union territories, found that around 1 in 3 HbA1c test results fall in the diabetic range. Whereas, 1 in 4 individuals displayed signs of prediabetes.
The findings further revealed that more than half of those who test for blood sugar levels show some irregularities, indicating the tightening grip of diabetes in the country. What is more concerning is that the latest study titled "Diabetes: The Silent Killer Sweeping Across India" also showed worrying trend in the changing age profile of diabetes. Many participants under the age of 30 showed positive to high blood sugar levels.
The analysis which was recently presented at PharmEasy also revealed that 1 in 4 individuals with diabetes showed thyroid abnormalities and 1 in 3 people with liver function issues. The report also noted that about 90% of people who were examined had deranged lipid profiles, increasing the risk of heart disease.
Puducherry Has Highest Number of Diabetes Cases
Researchers highlight that men 51.9% are more likely to develop high blood sugar levels when compared to women, 45.43%. The highest number of diabetes cases in an Indian state includes Puducherry (63%), Odisha (61%), Tamil Nadu (56%) and Goa (54%) reported higher blood sugar levels
