Dry skin and atopic dermatitis risk in winter: Many people deal with skin issues in the winter season, when there is little humidity and more dryness in the air. Long term exposure to cold air can aggravate pre-existing skin conditions, including atopic dermatitis, which is a type of eczema. It is a chronic skin condition that can lead to allergic reactions like inflammation, redness, and itchy patches on the skin. While it can affect people of all age groups -- from children and adults, to the elderly -- it is more common in kids, or those who have a family history of certain allergies or asthma.
According to Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist at Dr Shareefa Skin Care Clinic in Mumbai, atopic dermatitis can be irritating. Though it is not contagious, dealing with it can be frustrating for many because of the constant itching and discomfort. "It can negatively affect one's day-to-day activities, and also their sleep. But the good news is, one can control this condition and manage their symptoms with proper treatments and precautions," the doctor states.
The dermatologist says the exact cause of atopic dermatitis is not yet known, but it is believed to be caused by a combination of factors like genetics, environmental elements, and others. "Those with a family history of conditions like eczema, asthma, and hay fever are more likely to develop atopic dermatitis at some point in their life. The skin barrier also plays a crucial role. If it is weak, it can easily lose its natural moisture and allow irritants to penetrate. Additional factors like extreme stress, sudden changes in temperature, and harsh skincare products like soaps can also worsen this condition."
One can experience a range of symptoms when it comes to atopic dermatitis. The symptoms can vary from person-to-person depending on the severity of the condition. Symptoms can include:

"Atopic dermatitis tends to affect specific areas of the body, such as the face, neck, hands, knees, or elbows. Due to persistent itching, it can severely impact the quality and duration of sleep. Over time, it can cause immense discomfort and emotional turmoil," the expert warns.
It is possible to successfully manage and control the symptoms of atopic dermatitis with proper treatment and precautions. Treatment options typically include using moisturisers to keep the skin hydrated, while also applying topical creams to reduce inflammation. "If your atopic dermatitis is severe, your doctor may recommend undergoing 'phototherapy' or certain medications for effective results. Avoid triggers that can irritate your skin such as harsh or chemical-based soaps, allergens, or extreme weather changes. Apply a generous layer of moisturiser to strengthen the skin's natural barrier. Wear soft and breathable fabrics. Using a humidifier can help reduce skin irritation," the doctor concludes.
