Wrinkles and greys are not the only two things women dread as they age. Watching our proud breasts go from perky to saggy also figures prominently in our fright list. We women spend lavishly on good quality bras to give our breasts all the lift they need, but science says that might just be the dumbest thing to do. Be warned ladies, this is upsetting. The primary purpose of a bra is to give support to the breasts, but it looks like the female undergarment is failing at the very job that is expected of it. Ladies, what we are about to share might make you gasp, but your bra is making your breasts sag!
In India, young girls are encouraged to wear bras right around the time their bodies start developing. Physical education instructors at school also drill in the importance of wearing the undergarment early, saying that girls develop a stoop if they don't. If scientific evidence is anything to go by, wearing bras might do more harm than good. A 15-year French study published in 2013 has gone all out against bras saying that they do more harm than good. In fact, bras may not have any benefits at all! Dr Jean-Denis Rouillon, a professor at the University of Franche-Comt led the study and told France Info that bras have no medical, physiological or anatomical benefits and that breasts deprived of gravity will end up sagging.
As part of the research, more than 300 women between 18 and 35 were studied and the effects of brassiere use of their bodies were studied. According to the research, the wearing bra at an early age stops the muscles that support the breasts naturally from developing. Bereft of gravity, the breasts depend on artificial support provided by the bras and start sagging.
So should we get rid of our bras yet? Sad news is that it is too late if you are already accustomed to the bra. But there are other reasons why going braless might be good for your health. Read how ill-fitting bras can cause breast diseases. Wearing the wrong bra for long hours can result in breast pain and constriction of the lymphatic vessels. Although the notion is widely rejected by the medical community, there could be a connection between bra wearing and breast cancer.
