COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that can severely damage your lungs, but is that it? No, the virus can affect other organs of your body too. The whole world is aware and extremely worried about the deadly disease that doesn't seem to stop. With new mutations in the COVID-19 virus family, health experts are seeing new challenges every day. In recent research, experts have stated that the coronavirus can cause severe damage to the liver and also lead to liver abscess.
The alert comes in after a hospital in Delhi reported that almost 14 COVID-19 recovered patients were diagnosed with "unusually large" and multiple liver abscesses as post-disease complications in the past two months. "What we found unusual was that within 22 days of the recovery from Covid-19, patients who were otherwise immunocompetent had large areas of both lobes of their liver filled with pus at multiple locations, requiring drainage and hospitalisation," Dr Anil Arora, the chairman at the Institute of Liver Gastroenterology and Pancreaticobiliary Sciences, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, was quoted as saying.
Liver abscess is a severe liver condition in which the organ develops pus-filled cysts. The liver is a very important organ of the body which carries out a big role in the body's digestive system and helps in other essential functions. Liver abscess is generally caused by infections spread from other nearby organs. This condition can be easily treated if diagnosed early, however, the condition can become chronic if not treated on time. An untreated liver abscess can cause sepsis, a life-threatening blood infection. Worried? Here are some common symptoms of the condition that you must know.
