Most people believe that eating one methi ladoo early morning keeps the blood sugar level in control, and thus, make it a habit to start their day with it. The fact that it also provides sufficient energy to kick-start the day is an added bonus. But does this have any effect on your blood sugar level? Here s what nutritionist Dr Neha Sanwalka has to say.

Methi ladoo contains methi seeds that are a rich source of soluble fibre, which in turn slows down the absorption of sugar in the blood. Also, methi is rich in amino acids that in turn promotes insulin production, thereby aiding in better control of diabetes. As these ladoos contain sugar, people with uncontrolled diabetes should avoid them. And for those with blood sugar levels in control, a maximum of one ladoo per day is recommended. Also, try this yoga for controlling diabetes.

Here s how to prepare methi ladoo in a healthy way

Ingredients:

  • 50 g methi seeds
  • 250 g of whole wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp of guar gum
  • 200 g of jaggery (Don't add sugar)
  • 1 tbsp of ghee

Preparation:

  • Dry roast 50 g methi seeds on low flame, till they turn golden brown in colour and keep them aside.
  • Now, roast 250 g of whole wheat flour by adding 1 tbsp of ghee, till it turns slightly brown in colour.
  • Splutter 1 tbsp of guar gum in a teaspoon of ghee. Take it off the heat and let it cool.
  • Mix roasted methi seeds, wheat flour and gaur gum with 200 g jaggery and grind them.
  • Now, divide the mixture into small portions and make ladoos.
  • You can also add 1 tsp of dry ginger powder to make it healthier.

Along with people with uncontrolled diabetes, evenpregnant women must avoid it as methi ladoos are known to induce labor. People with uncontrolled diabetes should rather consume soaked methi seeds. However, breastfeeding women are advised to eat 1-2 ladoos per day as methi contains a compound known as galactagogue, which increases breast-milk production.
