Colon cancer is increasing in most countries because of the consumption of ultraprocessed and ready-to-eat foods, according to a recent study from Mass General Brigham. This type of food is fast and convenient, yet numerous research efforts demonstrate that it can negatively affect the gut and increase the risk of colon cancer if this type of food is consumed regularly.

Researchers found that women who consumed around 10 servings of ultraprocessed foods per day had a 45% higher risk of developing adenomas, benign but precancerous growths in the colon or rectum, compared to those who consumed about three servings daily. These adenomas are known early indicators of colorectal cancer.

Why Ready-To-Eat Foods Can Be Harmful?

Ready-to-eat foods are often highly processed. They are usually highly filled with sodium, sugar, saturated fat, preservatives and artificial colours. Such components may have irritating effects on the digestive system, slow the passage of food through the digestive system and cause inflammation. Gradually, this swelling can predispose the development of abnormal growth of cells in the colon.

Most of the ready-to-eat foods are also devoid of fibre, which is suitable for a healthy gut. Fibre allows the passing of waste without difficulty and poor colon cleanliness. Due to low-fibre diets, constipation, intestinal imbalance and increased colon cancer are likely to occur.

How Processed Foods Affect Your Gut Health?

The healthy bacteria that defend the body are found in the gut. When these good bacteria decrease, and the bad ones increase, this is because of consuming so many processed foods. Such an imbalance can lead to chronic inflammation that is associated with a lot of cancers, such as colon cancer.

Lacking temperature processing is also a source of the formation of harmful compounds in foods. Such substances might cause injury to the cells of the digestive tract and lead to the development of cancer in the long run.
