Vaginal dryness can be bothersome or downright painful depending on its severity. It can lead to a burning sensation, itching, irritation, pain during urination and intercourse. In medical terms, it is called as atrophic vaginitis or vaginal atrophy. Here are seven foods that can help combat vaginal dryness.
The most common reason for vaginal dryness is low estrogen level, a condition that is apparent after menopause. However, some women can also experience the same during breastfeeding or at times when there is a decrease in estrogen production due to other physiological problems.
Pre-menopausal vaginal dryness could be so distressing that it can hamper your productivity, affect your relationship and make you fatigued throughout the day. If you have ever suffered from this condition, you would know I am not exaggerating. There are a number of ways to treat this condition eating a soy-based diet, popping pills to improve estrogen production or applying natural applicants like coconut oil. Here are five other ways to combat vaginal dryness naturally.
At least, I can vouch for coconut oil because it worked for me and gave instant relief whereas diet and pills take a while to work.
Here is why coconut oil works best for vaginal dryness
It acts as an excellent lubricant: It helps moisturise and lubricate the area and relieve immediate discomfort due to burning and itching. It soothes the area and alleviates pain aggravated by friction due to movement. Did you know coconut oil also helps to burn fat?
It protects from infections: Coconut oil has certain antibacterial and antiseptic properties that help to fight fungal and bacterial infections. There are studies that indicate that topical application of coconut oil can help reduce atopic dermatitis . However, it also works for vaginal atrophy.
It keeps the area hydrated: Lack of estrogen makes the area dry and itchy. Not only does coconut oil take care of the dryness, it also shields the genitals from bacteria or fungus and saves you from vaginal candidiasis or vaginal infection.
In my experience applying coconut oil helped keep vaginal dryness at bay for a couple of days without reapplication. In case you suffer from severe dryness, applying coconut oil regularly can help. However, it is better to go to your doctor and find out if this condition is a warning sign.
