Chest X-ray, as we all know, is recommended when the doctor tries to figure out what’s wrong with your heart or lungs. As chest X-rays are quick and easy, these are mostly prescribed for emergency diagnosis. However, there’s more to X-rays than just radiations that are passed through the body to get a picture of what is inside. So if you are wondering how is it done, preparation tips, benefits and risks, then bookmark this article because our expert Dr Rashmi I Parikh, Consultant Radiologist, Balabhai Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai explains everything in detail to help you out. It is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that uses small doses of ionising radiation heart, lungs, airways and bones of the spine and chest. If you suffer from breathing difficulties, chest pain, fever or a persistent cough, then your doctor might recommend this test to confirm the diagnosis of pneumonia, emphysema, heart problems, lung disease and other conditions.

Do I need to prepare for it beforehand?

Unlike blood tests for diabetes, chest X-rays require no special preparation. However, you may be asked to remove jewellery, metallic chains, zippers, bras containing metal equipment, eye glasses, etc. as it might appear in the X-ray film thereby interfering with the diagnosis. You might be required to wear a loose gown.

Can pregnant women go for X-rays?

If you are pregnant, then X-rays it can be done only after strict medical advice. Even if you are suspicious that you are pregnant or have missed your periods, then it is best to consult a doctor to inform the expert about the same before going in for an X-ray.

How does the machine look like?

The equipment consists of a box-like apparatus which contains X-ray film or a special plate which records the images and is usually mounted on a wall. However, it can also be suspended over a table. In the cases of emergency, a portable X-ray machine is used which contains an X-ray image holder connected to a flexible arm of the X-ray tube and placed beneath the patient.

How does it work?

You might be asked to stand in front of the x-ray machine with your body facing the equipment. After the machine is aimed at the part of the body being examined, a beam of radiation passes through the body. This records the image on a photographic film or digital detector. You have to stand with the chest pressed on the image plate and hands on the hips. You might be asked to hold your breath for few seconds as the picture is taken because it reduces the chances of a blurred image.

How much time does it take?

The entire examination right from positioning to verifying the image is done in 15 – 20 minutes. You might be asked to wait for few minutes to hand over the result as it has to be interpreted by the radiologist. You may like to know about how to read your medical reports: Complete Blood Count.

Is the procedure painful?

No, the procedure is not painful at all. However, you might experience discomfort due to the cold temperature of the room and cold recording plates.

How does an X-ray image look like?

The chest X-ray appears in the form of white, grey and black images. The ribs and spine appear white or grey as it absorbs much of the radiation due to the presence of dense tissues, whereas the lung tissue appears black as it contains soft tissue and is filled with air, which absorbs little radiation.

Are there any side-effects or risks associated with X-rays?

Unlike popular belief, no amount of radiation remains in the body after the procedure. There is a minimal risk of cancer due to exposure to radiations during the procedure. However, the benefits of accurate diagnosis outweighs the risk. Also, there are no side-effects of the X-ray procedure.
