Several health conditions, lifestyle choices and medications can also make it difficult for your body to absorb vitamin B12, leading to its deficiency. And one of the common conditions that can lead to vitamin B 12 deficiency is celiac disease. Dr Deepak Sanghavi, Deputy Chief of Lab Services, Metropolis Healthcare Ltd says, Celiac disease, which is an immune reaction to gluten and affects the small intestine affects a small percent of the Indian population and is linked to vitamin B12 deficiency. The disease, which is more common in North India, damages the lower part of the small intestine, which is responsible for vitamin B12 absorption and can lead to low levels in the body. Additionally, chronic atrophic gastritis, fish tapeworm, and certain types of bariatric surgery are also linked to vitamin B12 deficiencies. Not just celiac disease, even certain medications can put you at risk of vitamin B 12 deficiency. Certain acid-reflex drugs like proton pump inhibitors which treat stomach ulcers contain ranitidine hydrochloride. Prolonged use of such medication can affect the absorption of vitamin B12 as well as minerals such as calcium, iron and magnesium. Metformin, which is a common drug used in the treatment of PCOS and diabetes has also been linked to a risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. For the body to synthesize vitamin B12, it needs healthy gut bacteria. Research shows, that the food you eat, is linked with your gut microbiota. Unfortunately, symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency do not show early on, and in some cases can take years before they are detected. Some of the common symptoms include pale and listless skin, fatigue, pins and needles sensation, glossitis, mouth ulcers, changes in mobility, disturbed vision, dizziness and in rare cases, high temperatures. If you find yourself experiencing any of these symptoms, it is recommended to get a thorough diagnosis by a reputed laboratory, before you can begin treatment. Here are few natural sources of vitamin B12 you need to include in your diet.
