Death Due To Heart Inflammation Common Among COVID Recovered Patients; Warning Symptoms To Know
As the world battles the deadly coronavirus, experts over time have suggested that vaccines are the only tool that can help us ward off the virus infection and keep ourselves protected. However, vaccines don't come without any side effects. Some vaccine side effects are normal and considered a good sign while some can be serious and may require a doctor's intervention. One of the most talked-about side effects of the vaccines is blood clotting and heart inflammation. Experts had earlier stated that there was an increasing number of cases where recipients of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech have complained about suffering from certain heart-related disorders such as abnormal heartbeat and heart inflammation. However, in a recent study, scientists have stated that the risk of developing heart inflammation is more among those who have been infected with the coronavirus compared to the vaccinated individuals.
Rare Heart Inflammation More Common After COVID Than Pfizer Vaccine
Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine has been linked with an increased risk of developing myocarditis -- a rare type of heart inflammation that can be accompanied by heart failure, abnormal heartbeat, and sudden death. But a new study has asserted that it is not the vaccines that increase the risk of this severe heart condition, but COVID-19 itself can put the patient at risk of developing myocarditis.
The study which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that Pfizer/BioNTech BNT162B2 vaccine against coronavirus infection is safe and doesn't lead to life-threatening side effects. "Myocarditis was found to be associated with the vaccine, but rarely -- 2.7 excess cases per 1,00,000 vaccinated individuals. The myocarditis events observed after vaccination were concentrated in males between 20 and 34. In contrast, coronavirus infection in unvaccinated individuals was associated with 11 excess cases of myocarditis per 1,00,000 infected individuals," a researcher was quoted as saying.
Some of the other side effects associated with vaccination against COVID-19 include - Abnormal swelling of the lymph nodes, body ache, rise in body temperature, blood clotting (extremely rare), etc. In comparison to this people who are not vaccinated may suffer from serious side effects in the aftermath of COVID recovery. These may include - Cardiac arrhythmias (3.8-fold increase), kidney damage (14.8-fold increase), pericarditis (5.4-fold increase), pulmonary embolism (12.1-fold increase), deep vein thrombosis (3.8-fold increase), myocardial infarction (4.5-fold increase), and stroke (2.1-fold increase).
