You ve heard this from your elders or even friends several times. Going to bed with wet hair isn t a good idea. I get the point that sleeping with wet hair can damage it or make it messy when you wake up. But sleeping with wet hair might give you a cold, sounds doubtful. How true is this? Can you catch a cold by just sleeping with wet hair? Is this season specific or can happen during summers too? We asked Dr Ambanna Gowda, Consultant Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, Bangalore to shed some light on this and here s what he has to say: Common cold is caused by virus. So you can contract the cold only if you come in contact with the rhino virus which causes common cold. Rhino virus can thrive in low temperatures, but at the end, catching a cold due to wet hair is a myth. Read: 6 dos and don ts for managing wet hair. Extreme cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia and may affect the immune system. If the temperature is very cold, you might want to pat dry your hair completely before going to bed. Sleeping with damp hair will not cause any kind of infection unless you have come in contact with someone who already has cold and flu. So it is absolutely safe to sleep with wet hair. Similarly, stepping out with wet hair during cold weather also does not lead to any infections or cold and flu. If people around you who are infected with cold and cough follow basic hygiene, then your chances of coming in contact with the virus reduce, and keep diseases at bay.
