I brush my teeth 4-5 times a day once in the morning, at night and after every meal. Is it OK to brush several times during the day? Hope it will not cause any damage to my teeth or affect their appearance. Please suggest.
Brushing twice a day is highly recommended for maintaining oral health. It not just keeps your teeth sparkling clean but also maintain your gums. Tongue cleaning is also an important part of your oral health. Dr Jyoti Sachdeva, Consultant Endodontist, Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurgaon suggests if brushing more than two times is required and beneficial:
Brushing more than 3-4 times in a day is a strict no-no. It will lead to erosion of the teeth enamel and abrasion. It will also lead to pushing back of gums exposing the sensitive root area giving rise to cavities and other gum infections. Even if you are brushing more than 2 times during the day, the brushing technique must be correct. You need to place the brush at the right angle and give gentle strokes to avoid any kind of damage to the gums. Here are some tips for brushing your teeth the right way.
Also, spending too much time to brush your teeth is a myth. All you need is 20-25 correct strokes that cover the entire mouth to clean your teeth. This should take 2-3 minutes at the most. The pressure needs to be basic and gentle around gums. The ideal way should be up and down round and round. Read: 7 brushing mistakes you may be making.
If you want to keep your mouth clean after every meal, you can gargle with a mouthwash or plain water and use floss especially post breakfast and dinner. Brushing after lunch is acceptable and won t cause damage to your teeth. Read: 10 oral hygiene mistakes we often make.
