Can Mosquitoes Spread HIV? Here’s What You Need To Know

Mosquitoes are notorious for transmitting severe illnesses such as dengue fever, Zika virus and malaria, making them one of the most fatal creatures on Earth. However, can they spread HIV? There is a common misconception that mosquitoes can transmit HIV as well. The answer to this is a big NO.

Let's delve deeper to know why they cannot do so:

  • Understanding the mechanism of how mosquito bites work is critical to debunking this common myth. Mosquitoes feed on human blood but do not transmit it between hosts. HIV is a virus that requires precise circumstances to spread, and mosquitoes lack the fundamental processes that allow the virus to live or multiply within their bodies.
  • In humans, HIV replicates by binding to T cells. However, mosquitoes lack T cells because the virus cannot copy or migrate to the mosquito's salivary glands. The mosquito digests HIV particles with the actual blood meal, and the HIV particles are destroyed during the digestion process.
  • Even if a mosquito has been exposed to HIV, it cannot transmit the virus because its bites inject saliva rather than blood. To transmit HIV from person to person, a mosquito must be able to carry adequate amounts of the virus. A mosquito would have to provide a lot of bites during the brief time HIV remains in their body. Blood that a mosquito may have previously consumed is never transferred to other persons.

Low Levels Of HIV In Human Blood

For mosquito-borne illnesses to be transmitted from person to person, the accompanying virus must circulate in the host's blood at high levels. HIV circulates in human blood at far lower concentrations than required to cause a new infection. If a mosquito injects HIV-positive blood into a human, it would take 10 million mosquito bites to transfer one unit of HIV. In comparison, those who are HIV positive typically carry little more than ten units of HIV. Similarly, accidentally eating or squashing a mosquito will not result in HIV infection. In these cases, the mosquito carries insufficient HIV-positive blood to infect a new host.

What Is The Actual Transmission Mechanism For HIV?

HIV is transmitted by direct contact with particular body fluids, such as:

  1. Blood, semen and pre-seminal fluid, breast milk and fluids are found in the vagina and rectum.
  2. For HIV transmission, the virus must enter another person's circulation through mucosal membranes or open wounds to be transferred.
  3. Unprotected sexual contact and needle sharing are the most typical methods for HIV to spread.
  4. It may be transmitted from an infected mother to her newborn during pregnancy, delivery, or nursing in some circumstances.
