My friend was suffering from diarrhoea and her doctor recommended isabgol. Whereas, when my uncle had constipation, he was also advised isabgol. Can isabgol be used to treat both diarrhoea and constipation? Please answer.
The query is answered by Dr Rajiv Khosla, Gastroenterologist, Max Superspecialty hospital, Saket.
Isabgol is a non-absorbable (insoluble) fibre that is mostly used to treat constipation. However, in some cases, it is also prescribed for dealing with diarrhoea, depending on the condition of the patient. However, when suffering from diarrhoea do not consume isabgol without a doctor s prescription.
In case of constipation, it becomes difficult to pass stool due to an increase in the intestinal transit time, which is the time taken for the stool to pass through the intestine. Using isabgol slows down the transit time. The fibre present in isabgol causes absorption of the water, thereby bulking up the stool. Hence, it not only normalises the transit time but also causes softening of stool, relieving constipation. Isagbol is found to have a direct role in the treatment of constipation and hence, commonly recommended. Here are top 10 home remedies for constipation that work (and how to use them).
Although not usually recommended in the case of diarrhoea, isabgol works by solidifying the stool. Most people believe that it might be due to the fibre which absorbs the excess water present in the stool, causing it to become firm or solid. Unlike oral rehydration solutions (ORS), isabgol doesn t play a direct role in the treatment of diarrhoea. Also read about top reasons to include isabgol or psyllium in your diet.
How much is too much?
The usual recommended dosage of isabgol to treat constipation is adding two three teaspoons of the powder in a litre of water. But depending upon the condition of the person, the amount might vary. Avoid taking it in excess as isabgol also has side-effects. Here are 3 side-effects of isabgol you should know about.
