Prolonged sitting without any physical movement can increase your risk of many health conditions without you knowing the long-term effects. Experts note that people who sit for long hours in one position have often reported cases such as heart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes, including back pain, weak muscles and poor posture. Despite its ill effects, sitting in one position for long durations has become unavoidable due to our demanding fast-paced lifestyle. The good news is that researchers are claiming that cocoa, coffee and tea that are easily accessible in your office can help prevent certain health issues associated with prolonged sitting. A recent study backed by the University of Birmingham claims such foods can help protect blood vessels from the negative effects of prolonged sitting.

How Does Prolonged Sitting Affect Your Health

Experts explain that when a person sits for long hours, it reduces their blood vessels' ability to function normally. Previous studies proved that even a 1 per cent drop in vascular function can increase the risk of cardiovascular conditions like heart disease, stroke and heart attack by 13 per cent. However, a study published in the Journal of Physiology shows that consuming foods that are high in flavonols could counterbalance the decline of heart health that is caused by prolonged sitting.

Dr. Catarina Rendeiro, Assistant Professor in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Birmingham and lead author, said, "Whether we are sitting at desks, behind the wheel of a car, on a train, or on the sofa reading a book or watching TV, we all spend a lot of time seated.

"Even though we are not moving our bodies, we are still putting them under stress. Finding ways to mitigate the impact that sitting for uninterrupted periods has on our vascular system could help us cut the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases."

Method Of Study

A team of researchers from the University of Birmingham examined 40 healthy young men who had higher fitness levels and twenty had lower fitness levels. They analyzed the effect of flavanols during a two-hour sitting period. Before the analyzis began, the participants consumed either a high-flavanol cocoa drink consisting of 695 mg of total flavanols per beverage or a low-flavanol cocoa drink consisting of 5.6 mg of total flavanols per beverage.

Following the analysis, researchers proved that people in both higher and lower fitness groups who consumed a low flavonol drink had a decline in Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) in the blood vessels.

"Our experiment indicates that higher fitness levels do not prevent the temporary impairment of vascular function induced by sitting when only drinking low-flavanol cocoa. Importantly, after the high-flavanol drink, both fitter and less-fit participants kept their FMD the same as it was before sitting for two hours," Dr. Sam Lucas, Professor of Cerebrovascular, Exercise & Environmental Physiology at the University of Birmingham and co-author explained.
