Hi , I am 23 man and I have been suffering from continuous and uncontrollable burping before and after eating. This happens at anytime of the day. I don't smoke or drink. I do eat junk food though. It's been more than 6 months now and there was no sort of relief even after taking all kinds of medication for my condition. I do not wish to undergo any sort of surgery. I would really appreciate if you suggest a permanent remedy for the same.
Answered by Dr. Sunit Kumar Shukla, Gastroenterologist, Seven Hills Hospital
Belching/ burping is a voluntary effort as a result of coordination of several skeletal (voluntary) muscles in throat region. Hence, it can only be curbed voluntarily. Urge to belch frequently arises from an upper abdomen discomfort. The person induces a belch which temporarily relieves the discomfort. Hiatus Hernia is a common cause of such a discomfort.
However, the `feeling` returns quickly only to induce another burp. The solution is to suppress the urge to belch voluntarily, in the first place. To help this, the person can suck (and not chew) on an antacid tablet (4-6 tablets in a day). Further, he/she can `sip` (and not drink) on 1-2 tsp of an antacid syp. These will help to suppress the desire to belch.
