I have heard this way too many times and from too many people that adding ghee to your food helps to clear bowels easily. Of course, there are certain foods that help to in bowel movements and treat constipation without much difficulty, but many of those home remedies are just mere myths. Now, whether ghee actually helps you to deal with constipation problem or not is a bit tricky to answer. Some Ayurvedic texts do suggest that adding ghee in your diet can help in this case but there aren t any scientific data to validate this fact. Here are six reasons why you should add ghee to your diet.

We asked Dr Bhavi Mody Vrudhi Holistic Health, Mumbai, if there is any truth behind this home remedy. Ghee has its own benefits and can help in a number of ways. In general, we advise four spoons of fat intake throughout the day. So if you are splitting it into one spoon of ghee and three spoons of oil throughout the day, you will still be able to reap its benefit. Even though ghee is considered to be good fat, it might not make any sense to keep adding dollops of ghee and increasing caloric intake to deal with constipation, she says. Here are five home remedies for constipation that don t work.

In fact, she also highlights that to treat constipation through diet it is necessary to have the right amount of fibre in the diet. If your diet can help you deal with constipation it is the fibre that will do the work for you. However, fibre alone might not be enough to fight constipation unless your water intake is also to the optimum. When you are dehydrated all that fibre in your body cannot expell the stool from your system. Water acts as the lucrative agent that helps fibre to do its work, says Dr Mody. Here are eight medical conditions that can lead to constipation.

If you still want to try this trick to deal with your constipation try it by adding a moderate amount of ghee in your diet. Just two spoonfuls of ghee is enough to help you reap its benefits. However, if you are following any strict diet because of any health crisis like a PCOD, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, etc it is better to ask your dietician or doctor if you should increase your ghee intake to tackle constipation. Sometimes with chronic constipation only increasing the fibre intake might not be the only way to deal with it and require medication. Talk to your doctor if constipation is bothering you for more than a fortnight to get to the core of the problem.
