October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Being overweight is a bad thing. Yup, not only do most women feel like they do not fit the stereotype of a 'perfect' body (whatever that really is!) but it also has quite a few implications on your health. One such ill effect of being overweight is breast cancer. Studies mention that the risk of a woman who is overweight or obese is greater after she has gone through menopause. But even if you haven't reached the age of menopause (or are still years away from its onset) know that if you have belly fat, you are at a higher risk of suffering from breast cancer as compared to your menopausal counterparts. This is because your waist to hip ratio and specifically your BMI, plays an important role in keeping you cancer free. According to a study published in the journal obesity review [1] pre-menopausal women with a high waist-to-hip ratio were at a significantly (24% to be precise) higher risk of suffering from breast cancer.

How you can beat this risk factor

Losing weight is one way, but another handy method is to tone and strengthen your core muscles so that you burn off that belly fat. While it is not possible to lose weight from certain areas in your body, focusing on your core can significantly lower your risk. Here are some great yoga poses to help strengthen you core and lose belly fat.
