Breast cancer is a disease that occurs when abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumours. This chronic medical condition begins inside the milk ducts or the milk-producing lobules of the breast. Researchers say that the first stage of breast cancer is not life-threatening but it can spread through the lymph nodes or other organs and become fatal when it is left untreated.

What Is Dense Breasts?

A woman's breast contains three kinds of tissues such as glandular tissue, fibrous connective tissue, and fatty breast tissue. Dense breast means the relative amount of these different types of tissues that are seen in the mammogram, while a relatively low amount of fatty breast tissue is seen.

There are four types of dense breast, and according to the American College of Radiology'sBreast Imaging Reportingand Data System, which is sometimes shortened to BI-RADS, they include:

  • Almost entirely fatty: As the name suggests, this means all of the breast is made up of fatty tissue.
  • Scattered fibroglandular dense: It means that most of the breasts are made up of fatty tissue, but scattered areas of dense breast tissue.
  • Heterogeneously Dense: The breast tissue of this group of people is mostly dense with some areas of fatty tissue.
  • Extremely Dense: All of the breast tissue in this category is dense breast tissue with little fatty tissue.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that about 40% of women who are over the age of 40 years fall into a 'dense' category when they undergo a mammogram.

How Do I Identify If I Have Dense Breast?

Explaining the importance of breast density, the US health agency states that a women who have dense breasts have a high chance of recovering from breast cancer. "The more dense your breasts are, the higher your risk," the CDC states. "Breast cancer patients who have dense breasts are not more likely to die from breast cancer than patients with non-dense (fatty) breasts."

People who are younger, pregnant, breastfeeding, taking hormone replacement therapy or have a lower body weight may generally have dense breasts. The only way to know if you have dense breast tissue is to undergo a mammogram, which is an X-ray of your breast tissue. Following the examination, a radiologist compares the amount of fatty tissue to dense tissue and decides the level of breast density. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) warns, "If your mammogram report letter says you have dense breasts, it means that you have either heterogeneously dense breast tissue or extremely dense breast tissue."
