Many people experience irrational fears, which can affect the quality of their life and prevent them from engaging in regular activities. There may not be a logical reason as to why an individual experiences crippling fear. Actor Bella Ramsey, for instance, has struggled with the disorder 'emetophobia', which is a debilitating 'fear of vomit'. It was so extreme that it even kept the young actor confined to their house, because they viewed everything outside as a 'threat'. The star of the series 'The Last of Us' spoke about this fear while appearing on an episode of 'The Louis Theroux Podcast'. The 21-year-old called it "this really intense fear", adding: "If you feel a bit sick, if someone else feels sick, or is sick, like, it is... the whole thing is absolutely terrifying." Ramsey, who goes by the pronouns 'they/them', also reportedly said during the podcast interview that they underwent a program and are "not emetophobic anymore". But, they still have a "slightly stronger reaction to vomit than the average person". "...or I am slightly more averse or afraid of it."

What Is Emetophobia?

As mentioned earlier, emetophobia is an excessive or irrational fear of vomiting. There are many people who live with this fear, and they are often known to experience severe anxiety. According to mental health experts, they may also display avoidance behaviour, and other symptoms related to the fear of vomiting. It could allude to either themselves, or others.

Just like Ramsey, who found it difficult to leave her house, this crippling phobia can impact daily life, causing individuals to avoid certain situations, foods, or even activities because of their fear.

During the podcast, the 'Game of Thrones' alum stated that the idea of a stomach bug, or having norovirus is enough to trigger the phobia. "It is such an all-encompassing fear," they were quoted as saying. The actor also mentioned that being around someone who is sick makes them ruminate on vomit. "...the unpredictability of, like, 'I don't know if I've got this' Say, if I have been in contact with someone who has got norovirus, for the next two weeks, it is a thing of monitoring how I am feeling."

It leads to many other things that can be limiting. "Like, what if I go out and go on the tube and then the symptoms come and I start to feel unwell. Now I throw up on the tube and how bad is that?" the actor was quoted as saying. They also mentioned that when they were 13, they could not leave the house, because everything outside was a "threat".

The actor did acknowledge that the fear was illogical but "intense". "There was a time when I thought that I'd rather die than throw up."

It should be noted that the fear of emetophobia can manifest in various ways, such as:

  • Fear of vomiting: The physical act of vomiting can be distressing and discomforting.
  • Fear of losing control: Worrying about not being able to prevent or control vomiting.
  • Fear of others vomiting: Acute fear and distress when seeing or hearing about other people vomiting.
